The blog was still down shortly after The Birthday Massacre’s show, so I’m posting this entry without the show being fresh on my mind. Considering that factor, as well as the fact that I had low blood pressure issues during their set, I don’t have much to offer in the way of a commentary about it. I will say that this was my 4th time seeing them perform, and it was beautifully vicious. I would argue that they should have been the ones to headline the show, because their set really did feel short-lived.

Due to the aforementioned blood pressure issues, I kept traveling to the back of the venue to sit down while they played (so that I wouldn’t faint). Therefore, I did not manage to capture as many videos and photos as I normally would at a show.

Here’s my HD video of The Birthday Massacre performing “Red Stars”

My husband Dominic, and my twinly best friend Danielle, accompanied me to the show. We also had the pleasure of running into our awesome friends Dee, Brandon, Jen, Gia, and Marvin. Being the fashonistas we are, Danielle and I observed that many of the attendees were surprisingly unconcerned with aesthetics – which was surprising considering the genre and the theatrical elements of TBM. Regardless, we did somewhat befriend some beautiful ladies that were amongst a group of more aesthetically-minded individuals – their names were Sharae and Emmily, and they turned out to be mutual friends with quite a few of our current friends!

Considering my recent weight loss and finally being able to express my style again (and LOVING it), as well as my bond with Danielle, I would say that my purpose of attending the show was really half social, half TBM. This will be apparent if you view all of the vain photos the three of us took! I had intended to do my hair in ringlets, because I thought that would feel more TBM-ish and go better with my Lip Service “Looking Glass” bustier. However, I didn’t quite give myself enough time to do that… oh well.

I would like to interject before I finish, that one of the bands that performed, The Agonist, is worth checking out. The bands that played the show, apart from TBM, were more within the metal genre, which is not typically something I take an interest in. However, The Agonist had a female lead with strong vocals, whose screams were not obnoxious (unlike some other female screamers), and I enjoyed their bit of piano use.

To view my Flickr set of photos from the show w/ the option to view full-size, CLICK HERE, or you can play the slideshow below.

I was never too worried, since I knew I had everything backed up, and it’s not like I had been posting regularly anymore. However, maybe I will start blogging again soon, if I keep the mentality I’ve had for the past couple days. I’ve sort of re-interested myself in my little hobbies, organizing my collections, etc. We’ll see…

Oh, and just FYI… I’ve lost 74 75 lbs now! I feel so fucking amazing!

I really wish I could mentally blog. Lately I can’t focus at all, so here’s a quick summary of life as of late:

Lost 40 lbs, would like to lose about 70 more.

Had 3 weeks off of work due to surgery. During that time I wanted to do a lot artistically, however I felt sick a lot of the time. I managed to write a huge album review article about Bitter Ruin for my site Mistress Ravine, and I read 2 novels as well.

When I got back to work, I (along with my co-workers) had to do mandatory overtime. Talk about a shock… I’m extremely drained from working so hard, and I can’t seem to have motivation for much of ANYTHING, regardless of how much I want to.

Next weekend I’m supposed to do photos for Phoenix Comic Con. Unlike the J-cons I’ve shot at, they are scheduling shifts for shooting because it’s so big. I mostly just shoot the things I’m interested in at cons, so I’m not sure about the whole thing. I hope whoever is organizing it realizes that shooting the music acts would be my strong point… I want to see my friends. There are various fashion events I’d like to shoot as well. I hope that if I am schedule for something I’m not interested in, that I will at least be granted the freedom to shoot other things as well.

BLAH

Almost 1 year after he last graced us with his charm, Voltaire returned the Club Mardi Gras in Scottsdale last Saturday (the 13th). This time, he was not accompanied by the Skeletal Orchestra, but that certainly did not take away from his performance! It was a splendid night… that man is damn talented, damn funny, and damn friendly!

I was able to capture 11 HD videos – that’s all of the songs he sang! It’s a first for me, capturing every song. My new cam and my standing location at the venue helped with that, since I didn’t have to hold up the cam and tire my arms. I did unfortunately cut off the beginning of “Death Death (Devil Devil Evil Evil Song)”, and a big portion of “The USS Make Shit Up”, but otherwise everything’s great. It’s wonderful he allowed me to record all of these without retribution, and that he even put his face (and butt) into my cam a couple times! I wanted to share his talent with the world, so please support Voltaire by buying his albums, his awesome merch, and going to his shows when he’s in town!

I setup a YouTube playlist (WHY DIDN’T I TRY THIS SOONER?!?!), so check it out below, or check out my YouTube channel! (I recommend viewing these at 720p fullscreen, if your computer can handle it!)

I also got some fine photos of some handsculpted dolls by a bohemian artist named Aleta, a very nice new photo with me & Voltaire, some beautiful shots of him performing, and some pictures of some lovely ladies that attended and their gorgeous attire. CLICK HERE to view my Flickr set of the photos as you wish (and w/ the option of full-size view), or simply view the slideshow below…

Mmm… I’m loving the new ways I’m sharing my media these days! So much easier and higher quality! Now if I could just afford to buy Adobe Lightroom
… I’m not at the point of earning compensation for photography, I do it out of my own pocket and passion. Hmmm…. If anyone wants to show their support…

;p (I don’t mean to be a greedy beggar, just looking for support as an artist. This is also in no way soliciting the photos/videos from the show, that is against the rules (and the law I believe) so they are NOT FOR SALE! Also, please comment on the blog if you are interested in hiring me to do any media for you! I’m not a complete pro yet, but I do very high quality stuff and have a LOT of experience!)

Today was a very interesting day, it was so bright, with a temperature that was not too hot, nor too cold, and nice light wind. There was a light rain here or there. On my way to my class at Mayo clinic, I saw the brightest rainbow I’d ever seen, going into the mountains when the angle allowed for it. I was listening to the alternative rock station, however it attacked my head at one point and I switched to the classical station.

Class was actually quite interesting today, far more than I expected, because we discussed body image. I thought I would be very quiet and get it done today, but that changed when the instructor asked about ideals of body today. That made me quite vocal and active in participation immediately! You know I had rants to contribute! We discussed that subject, along with the subject of self-esteem.

After class, I continued to listen to classical on the entire drive home. It was strange, the music played in sync with the drive. There was a soundtrack to the rain, the traffic, the beautiful sunset.

I’m not the nature-y type, and often I’d prefer to rock out, but there was just something different today… It was something that seemed deeper than I could comprehend, I knew it was meditative somehow and I knew enough for me to recognize life was special today. I could not stop my mind… I could not stop thinking of many things I wanted to do… Make digital paintings and sell them at Evermore Nevermore, photograph friends, do stomach crunches, watch Fantasia, put my hair up, email a friend, wash my face, play my sax at home, on the street, in a band, work on my dad’s website and merch, etc… I still don’t know what was/is going on, but I am home now and I am comfy and relaxed. As much as I dislike my husband’s new work schedule, I admit it feels very nice to relax in solitude. I’ve done a few of the things I thought about… I popped Fantasia in before I got on the laptop!

The man on Fantasia said something very interesting. (I’d like to interject to add the fact that I NEVER paid ANY attention to what that guy said when I was younger! It was alllllllll about the pegasus, unicorns, centaurs, pretty fish, faeries, troubled dinosaurs, etc… and of course I was terrified of Satan at the end! I digress…) He said that musicians/artists often misunderstand their own creations, and than Tchaikovsky didn’t like The Nutcracker. That’s really the funny thing about the biggest artists in history, I think a lot of them really have no idea just how much they effected the world or just how big they would get. Maybe some of them were smart/intuitive enough to foresee that, but certainly some had no clue. I know that I read Edgar Alan Poe had a very hard, starving-artist kind of life and didn’t have a proper funeral. As an artist, I would really like to effect the world for the better. I just hope that, if so, I can see that effect before the end.

I have been one busy bitch! OK, yes… I am always busy. I have been with the usual work and mundane tasks of course, but also big personal photo/website projects, more doctor’s appointments than ever before, multiple shows, etc!

I saw AFI on January 30, Polysics on February 3, and The Attitude etc. on February 4. Though I have to say the 4th takes the cake for being one of the best nights of my life, each of those shows were absolutely INCREDIBLE! I’m not talking “incredible” in the sense that I say every show I go to is (hey, I just know how to pick great shows :p), I mean that these were truly outstanding!

Admittedly, the AFI show wasn’t outstanding so much for AFI’s performance itself (which was still fan-fucking-tastic but seemingly short), but for me it was moreso the company I had. Dom and I went with Chris and I met up with Ashleigh and her friend Andrea and we all had SO MUCH fun together! We spoke of nostalgic memories of the old local music scene, hung out and drank, and rocked the fuck out! Really, it’s one of those “you had to be there” kind of things… It was a magical night. I am not doing a blog about THAT show because: 1) We were in the front and on the far side, and I couldn’t bring my big beautiful camera, so my pictures are nothing special. 2) I accidentally took my vids in the tiniest quality on the camera, so it’s just not worth it. Here are some phenominal photos by my acquaintance Alonso, click here.

Then… THEN… Polysics was mind blowing! Earth shattering! I already knew this, but their energy is through the roof! It’s definitely a crazy Japanese influence, never have I seen another band with their energy. (Our ears were ringing for 3 days afterward, ouch!) I also got to meet them, unlike last time, and I got a photo with Fumi and Kayo! I’m especially a fan of Kayo, not to discredit Fumi and her amazing bass skills. I’m glad I got to meet her because I heard a rumor that she’s leaving the band and they’re going on hiatus. (SAY IT ISN’T SO!!!) The reason that I’m not doing a whole blog about THIS show is that they didn’t allow photos and videos (and it would have been to easy to get caught, haha). It’s a damn shame, because I would have gotten some quality shit and I really think it would have been good promo for the band (of course, that may not matter if they ARE going on hiatus), not to mention my photos would have been better than the ones I saw in coverage that was allowed and I would have been willing to share as long as I got attribution. At least I was featured on the Phoenix New Time’s website for tweeting about the Polysics show! (Though they didn’t include my other good ones about the show, grr.) Check it out here.

Lastly… the freaking The Attitude show was the best because it had so many of my great friends (including besties!) AND an epic line-up with high-energy performances!

Lineup included:

Beezlewood, includes me & Dom’s amazing friend Dy

Comfort for Change

Lurid State

Opiate For the Masses, with Elias Malin and Andy Gerold who are VERY special friends from their days in My Darling Murder

The Attitude, who have always been mutual friends with MDM and whose music video I was in

Special guests included Jay Gordon (Orgy), Chris Vrenna (Marilyn Manson/Nine Inch Nails), Andy Gerold (Marilyn Manson), Elias Malin (Kill Hannah/Hollywood Undead), Elias Andra (Dead by Sunrise/Julien-K). I definitely wanted to meet Chris Vrenna, and I freaking NEVER thought I’d see Jay Gordon perform, let alone meet and take pics with him!

…And not JUST those things, but ALSO I got photos with all of my friends, the band memebers I wanted to meet, band friends I didn’t expect to see there, and I got beautiful shots of the performance and HD videos to preserve this once-in-a-lifetime show! FUCK YEAH!! Everything went perfectly that night!

And THAT is why I AM doing a blog about the last show. (Concert #258 for me!) However, due to the aforementioned busy life I’ve been leading… not to mention the fact that I’ve already posted everything elsewhere… this is different from my typical Photo/Video blogs from shows, it’s a miniblog. (Ha, though it ended up being kind of longer anyway huh?)

You have 2 options:

1) You can view the slideshow below if you’re really lazy, or

2) You can CLICK HERE to go to the Flickr set I posted with the pics, where you can view them larger and comment them! Go to my YouTube account, to view the full HD videos (+ 2 low quality) and comment on them! (I had the vids on Flickr, but then realized that they only allow 90 seconds of video, regardless of whether your account is a Pro one. LAME!)

Hm… at the rate things are going lately… I’m slightly tempted to blog my media this way from now on! It does depend on the quality though, as my Flickr is for a bit higher quality stuff.

I have a shit-ton of photos I need to add to the galleries on this website, as well as updates I need to make the the Hobbies and Ambitions relating to Dom and I dancing (which we’ve been doing since about September of last year).

From what I could gather by my photo albums, I became a fan of The Cover Up 6 years ago, I was 17 or 18 years old. I believe the first time I saw them play was at Neckbeard’s, a venue in Tempe, Arizona that is now non-existent.

Here is a picture of Joe Cotela, the lead singer, performing at Neckbeards in 2004

And here’s Justyn Sena, bassist, that same night

It’s so funny to see how much they’ve changed… (If you are interested in seeing the pics of me with the TCU guys over the years and seeing how we evolved, you can go to my Kat With Bands gallery, and click on “The Cover Up”.) If I had more time I’d post my collection of fliers & posters from old TCU shows as well, they’re great… maybe one day I will.

That was near the very beginning of my present total of over 200-something concerts attended… It was around the time I had finally gained my independence and strength following the demise of an unhealthy year-long relationship. Today I am such a different person in many ways than I was back then, and yet so very me and so very damn proud of it.

It was around the time when Myspace was new and the world was going through a social evolution, for better or for worse. It was the time that I believe The Scene was alive, the local music scene that is. Though years along the way I lost touch with the scene because of full-time employment, becoming an adult, I believe that the local bands that were around at that time were far more substantial that the ones around now. They weren’t just trying to copy other musicians, and they weren’t just kids trying to be something they’re not… they were (and still are) truly talented.

It was not only the time of The Cover Up, but also the time of Mink Rebellion, For the Record, My Darling Murder, The Format, Adam Panic, and more… all of which broke up, reformed, or mysteriously disappeared. All of the concerts I religiously attended weekly really helped me become the woman I am today. It was actually at Neckbeards that I met one of my longest and most loyal friends, Brianne. These bands probably don’t even realize just how deeply sentimental I feel for them, or just how devastating and nonsensical it was to us when they were gone.

However, many of their members went on to new, and some better in a way, things. I miss what was, but I am not too selfish, I am proud of what they’ve become… some of them…

The only local bands that I was so close to that ended up still going strong this year were The Cover Up and Peachcake. Though a lot of the original members (incl live band) of Peachcake are sadly gone, they are still going very strong. I am so fucking proud of where they’ve gotten, their passion for art, freedom, improving the world, and most recently to my great joy – exposing their fans to women’s rights and expressing their concern about it… saving me from feeling completely alone.

As for The Cover Up… This year on November 20, they had their final show…

…BUT!!! They’re not fucking gone! Despite multiple shows in the past with announcements of members departing, all of the members ended up sticking around. They are sticking together, they are continuing a band, they have just moved on from The Cover Up. I was able to see this decision from a more mature standpoint than I would have in the past, and I think it’s a very good thing for them. I know some of what they’ve been through as TCU, and I think it will be good for their musical careers to change, to start fresh. I do not feel a deep sadness within me, a longing to have what’s lost again, like I do with some of the other bands.

I know that it’s not easy for them either… a huge change in something you’ve invested so much commitment into is never easy. On top of it, I’m sure they received a lot of negativity from well-meaning fans who said, “NOOO! This is terrible! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?!”, and the like. I really look forward to their next project and shows!

(You know this is something I’m passionate about, because I didn’t even intend to write this much when posting this… it just flowed out, it didn’t feel like working… That’s the way it should be.)

Without further ado, here are the photos and videos, which I took with my gorgeous new camera I might add, from The Cover Up’s incredible final show at The Clubhouse… That night, and with their newest music, their mature sound really reflects how much they’ve grown. They truly are Arizona local music veterans.

1. Justyn setting up

2. Drummer Matt Reinhard signaling

4. Accidental photo art – the perfect representation of the pure energy that The Cover Up’s performance produces!

9. I’m completely in love with this shot. A wonderful portrayal of Joe’s intimate stage presence and how passionate their fans are, and then of course the gorgeous effect of the light rays.

15. Steve, Justyn, & Spanky (guitarist Marc Hernandez). I love the composition of this photo… TCU has often gotten me shots with great composition because of their placement on stage and how much they move around. Check out this awesome photo that I shot, developed, and handmade a print of for photography class.

16. Spanky milking it up, as usual. He was on the opposite end of the stage, so this is the only close-up I managed to capture.

17. Matt performing, drummers need love too! It just tends to be hard to get a deece shot of them, in the dark back.

18. Wicked cool shot of Steve… The photo looks like it has a Photoshop filter applied to it, but it wasn’t manipulated at all!

19. The Power of The Cover Up. Another accidental art shot… normally I don’t post my accident shots, but the ones from this show just came out really neatly abstract-like.

21. Joe… What I think makes this photo really special is that you can really see the joy glimmering in his eye, granted it’s easier to see when the photo is full-size.

38. This picture’s quality sucks, it looks like it was taken in the early ’90s, but it’s amusing because of the way Steve’s hair is sticking up, haha

39. Video of The Cover Up closing their set with “Go Get Em’ Tiger”.

It’s about time that I write a blog with a recreational purpose, it’s been a long time since I’ve done so. I’m also now sick of seeing that picture of me from October on the front page of my blog as well.

There’s been a lot I’ve neglected, but I can assure you that I have not been slacking in the least. You see, I’ve still been blogging on my alternative style/feminist website MistressRavine.com since the end of October. I got a media pass for Saboten-con 2009, shot hundreds of photos and some videos, and I posted about 6 separate articles covering different aspects of the convention. I tried to write them in a fairly professional manner, while still portraying it from a personal standpoint. If my site grows, as the webmaster I want to keep a relationship with the site users.

Life has been pretty stressful lately because our goals were doubled at work, so I have been busting my ass on that and then trying to retain enough energy on the evenings and in the weekends in order to get the articles done. I made sure to get about 1 article done a week, missing just about 2 weeks because of other obligations… So I really didn’t do so bad and I am proud of myself for working so hard to get things off the ground with the site. It’s definitely making slow progress, and although I wish I had more time to progress faster, I am thankful that there’s finally something happening at all.

It’s such a lift of a burden to have finally finished those articles. I do have many others in mind, a lot of things that I’ve become aware of in life that I’d like to share either on my personal site or on MR. I wish that my thoughts could be blogged so that I don’t miss chances to share things. I’ve kept a list of my goals inside the same file that I keep track of my money and it’s really helped me stay on track and complete my tasks. I’m really glad I did something like that, it’s an improvement. I still need to post the blog on the last The Cover Up show (which I think I plan to do next), add my Saboten-con photos to Flickr, send photos to Dom’s mami, add new photos to this site’s galleries, update the Hobbies to include info about the dance Dom & I have been learning, etc. No point in listing everything here, because I think it’s a good thing to always have something to do.

I wish I really was capable of doing EVERYTHING I want to do. I really don’t know how Amanda Palmer does it, she seems to have time for everything. Then again, she’s making a living off of art. I don’t know if I’ll ever have the balls to “jump off the cliff” as she’s put it, because I just don’t want to screw myself over.

I know that a lot of what I am saying is assuming people know what I’m talking about and a lot of it could be interpreted in a different way, but I really don’t care. I’m tired… interpret how you want, I just want to get things off my chest.

Urrggg Dominic is so distracting. Why is it that husbands make you wanna pull your hair out because they just wont give you the attention you need, and then the moment you’re independent and trying to work on something, they’re constantly trying to talk to you and stuff? It’s something I don’t want to deal with, having to find a way to nicely tell him that he’s being obnoxious… Why can’t we just be in synch?! I’d think he’d get the hint when I don’t respond to anything he says to him, but he just keeps talking… and then I feel like a jerk!

Oh god… now he’s playing the video game that annoys the hell out of me. I like the music, but then there’s like some guy in the music that’s all like, “Yo yeah what come on. Yeah what yeah yo. Come on. Yeah what yo yeah uh. Uh what yo yeah what what yo.” o.O SHUT UP!!!!

I need a vacation from life. I want pure pillowy comfort… no back pain, a clear mind, energy, breeze, beauty, pleasure….

Dominic stopped playing the game and says, “See? That’s not so bad.”… RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.

I love my husband… he just drives me crazy sometimes. Sadly, that’s reality. Anyone who says otherwise is lying or naive.

Well… I don’t particularly feel better about anything at this point… besides maybe knowing that the old picture will be bumped down from the top of the blog home now… Part of me wants to go outside and take a walk, but I’m scared of our neighborhood. I try to be strong and prepare myself for defense, but it’d be nice to just have somewhere outside to walk that I actually feel safe in.

Sometimes I think it’d be better for me to live like a recluse, out in the country or mountains or something… but that wont work because there’s too many social things I want. I don’t want to live somewhere I wont have concerts either. Hmmm… having a “summer home” would be good for giving me both worlds. Haha, like that’ll ever happen though… yet I can’t help but dream.

Alright, this has been stupid… I’m out for now, and hopefully next time I blog my mind will be functioning more properly.

After waiting for 4 long months, the day of Angelspit and KMFDM arrived, and it was WELL worth the wait! I had taken the day off of work, as well as the following day for the AZ State Fair. Doing so, despite the show being in the evening, was a very wise move… Reasons being: I needed to sleep in for once, drop my husband off at work, pick up Bri, shower, dress up, and get there early to GUARANTEE a spot on the front… and Bri and I certainly did get FRONT AND CENTER!

Angelspit and KMFDM are both awe-inspiring, so purely talented. They know exactly what they’re doing and they do it with the best of style and so flawlessly smoothly.

Honestly, I feel Angelspit’s performance stole the show. Don’t hate me, I LOVED KMFDM, I just enjoyed Angelspit more. Of course I am biased, kind of idolizing DestroyX and owning much more of their music. Despite the 251 concerts I’ve been to, I found myself overwhelmed with emotion and crying for joy (some would call it hysterical) when they came on, and it was hard to hold the camera still!

Without a doubt, my videos do not do their performance justice! Watching the video just doesn’t give you the feeling of watching them perform this music right in front of you (of course they never do)… with DestroyX’s viciously attitude-injected moves before you. Of course my camera’s stereo audio is quite nice, but it really doesn’t capture how fantastic they sound. Listen to their albums loud with some THX speakers, and that will give you a better idea! (I think this quote from their Myspace describes them best, “A harsh union between darkly vicious music and art. A multidisciplinary head fuck- encompassing high art, fashion and sound design in a horrific cacophony guaranteed to incite an extreme response.”) Anyway, I still really love the vids, they’re fuckin awesome and great for preserving memory… I recommend having HQ enabled when watching them.

After Angelspit’s performance, I stood there wondering if I would have my chance to meet them and if it would require waiting back near the buses into the wee hours of the night… Luckily that was not the case! A very enthusiastic fan shouted at ZooG to sign, and he said they’d be in the lobby in 2 minutes! Bri and I had trouble deciding whether to give up our spots in the front, but decided it was mandatory. I HAD to meet them! As big as they are and being that they’re from Australia, it was a rare opportunity.

As Bri and I walked toward the lobby, I glanced to my right and THERE THEY WERE walking parallel to us! I excitedly followed them, not wanting to attack them right away… and… I GOT TO MEET ANGELSPIT! It was the PERFECT experience!

I got to tell them some things that were really important to me and it wasn’t just fan-blather. I mean, yes I did tell DestroyX she was my hero and that I had gotten a bit hysterical over them (to which she told me she was the same way for Placebo :p), but I also told her how much I appreciate her not just for her music, but also for her style and her amazing graphic design, and she’s a strong woman which I admire. She told me she really appreciated that because ‘a lot of people just think she’s the girl in the band.’

Then I got to tell ZooG how I am pro-equality of men and women and I really appreciate that he (his style) helps promote male beauty & sexuality, because there is a lot of unnecessary idealism in society. He agreed and elaborated on it, talking about how people are expected to be certain weights, sizes, etc. I then told him how I really appreciate “Girl Poison“s lyrics, it means a lot to me. He told me about how there’s a 15 yr old musician in Australia, and she had posed for FHM, “a tits and ass magazine”, and how he thinks that’s just disgusting. I gave him a HUGE hug! That’s how men should be!

They were both INCREDIBLY sweet, funny, and lovable people, and like I said, it was perfect.

17. Me with DestroyX and ZooG of Angelspit. (I swear I looked better before the show ravaged me… The last picture in this entry should attest to that. I am easily ravage-able, especially my fine hair. There are more pictures from our meeting them following the photos and videos of the KMFDM performance. )

(Now I FINALLY have pictures for an International Bands section in my Kat with Bands gallery!)

Sticking around to meet Angelspit cut into the beginning of KMFDM’s set for us, but it was ok… I was in heaven! Besides, after a few songs we got back to the front, just behind the first row.

26. Lucia again… I enjoyed her the most out of KMFDM’s members, surprise surprise. In the next video, she does a killer scream!

That is everything I shot from the show… It may have been nice to meet KMFDM as well, but honestly I didn’t even think about it, I was so tired and content with meeting Angelspit, plus I wanted to get home to my husband!
